Garry started singing Country Music in Whangarei (north of Auckland) under the patient guidance of his mentor, Irene Gregory. He further developed his love for Country Music in the Country Music Clubs in Pukekohe, Waiuku and Papakura, in South Auckland, New Zealand. He tried his hand at convening the Auckland Country Music Awards in 2002, and although he enjoyed the administrative role, he prefers playing music, to talking about it. He formed his first band with his sons, Richard & Murray, in 2000 and called themselves "Southwest Muster". They played at events in and around Auckland as well as the annual Country Music Festivals in Paihia and the Hokianga. He moved on to play as a Drummer or Rhythm Guitarist and vocalist in the popular Auckland-based band RICA CHEZ, with talented Guitarist Reggie Thompson. Playing with Rica Chez, Garry backed (on drums), two Aussies, Mick Hearn and Billy Bridge when they appeared at the Bay of Islands Country Music Festivals in 2003, & 2004 (respectively). He moved to Australia, with his wife, Jean, in spring of 2004. They settled in the peaceful town of Southbrook, just southwest of Toowoomba, in Queensland. Well, it was peaceful before Gazza arrived!! He has continued his musical career by performing at Hotels around the Darling Downs as a Solo Act, or with his good friend, Mick Hearn. Garry also spent some time with some popular local bands. He released his first CD, "Take a Ride" in August 2005 . |
